A tongue thrust, or ororacial myofunctional disorder, happens when the tongue pushes against or between the teeth while your child is at rest, swallowing, or talking. Untreated, a tongue trust can cause dental and speech problems and is very difficult to correct without help from a speech-language pathologist.

Signs that your child may have a tongue thrust:

• Tongue pushing against front teeth

• Difficulty with the 's' and 'z' sounds

• Mouth breathing

• Drooling

• Messy eating

• Limited tongue movement

• Overbite, underbite or other dental issues
